Last week, I was invited to deliver a talk at Trinity College Dublin on the Psychological Skills of Peak Performance. The talk was part of Health Week at the college, and I covered some core concepts, such as...
These are essential concepts in the development of effective Mental Skills. They represent certain behaviours and ways-of-being associated with achievement and worldly success...
...but they are merely ideas.
We've got to find a way to make meaning of these ideas and apply them in our lives on a daily basis.
Information is not enough.
It's also important to know that achievement in and of itself is not enough either. We must have the energy and enthusiasm to get up every day and do what we do. Ulterior motives like earning a salary or obtaining a reward might motivate us in the short term, but we need something else if we are to live meaningful lives.
That's why I also covered "Daily Practice" in my talk – a way to apply these ideas.
Mental Skills are not simply about learning tricks to somehow out-manoeuvre our unconscious habits and drives. They are not things we need to do to get what we want.
They come about in many ways as a consequence of something else.
And that something else is at the foundation of all our doing. Although I may not always emphasise it in every article I write, it is nonetheless a vital ingredient.
So here's the vital ingredient...
🕖 Your relationship with time.
A one-hour talk wasn't enough to cover the full extent of Mental Skills and how time consciousness is related to all of this. In fact, I'm not sure I even got to speak about time per se.
Mental Skills are a vital component in understanding oneself, others, and the reality we occupy, and our concept of time is at the base or core.
I'm looking forward to sharing more on this with you over the next while, so if you're interested in achieving something meaningful, keep an eye on your inbox.
Regards for now, Larry
